Which parrot would make a good pet for my child?

A. In our effort to put a stop to the cycle of parrot rehoming, we prefer to adopt birds to the adults in a home, and not to children. Many of the birds in our adoption program, like Chip & Dale, were surrendered when their young owner went off to college. Even small birds can live more than 30 years with proper care.

We also see many surrenders during major life changes such as divorce, marriage and the birth of children. Remember, a parrot is a member of the family/flock, and while your children may grow up, move away and start a family of their own, the bird is there for a very (very, very) long time.

Additionally, because of the unusual nature of parrots (wild, prey animals), children involved in the care and training of a family bird should do so under very close adult supervision. With commitment, proper education and training, a parrot can be a wonderful addition to your family!
